Latrobe Magnesium Limited makes significant progress in the development of its Victorian magnesium production plant

The company intends to extract and sell metallic magnesium and cementitious materials from industrial fly ash, which is a waste stream from Yallourn’s lignite-fired power generation, using its first process of patented extraction in the world.

Latrobe Magnesium Limited (ASX: LMG) has made great strides in the development of its magnesium production plant in the Latrobe Valley area of ​​Victoria, Gippsland.

The company advanced some of the early developments at the plant, with the results of “value engineering” reviews being incorporated into the engineering and design work.

Importantly, Latrobe intends to mine and sell metallic magnesium and cementitious materials from industrial fly ash, which is currently a waste stream from the Yallourn lignite power generation, in using its world’s first patented extraction process.

Project update

Latrobe has completed repair work on the existing fence around the project site, as well as the new fence in place around the administration building and for the RTL subdivision.

In addition, the preliminary architectural drawings for the refurbishment of the administration building were completed and reviewed.

An application for a building permit must be submitted along with a contract to complete the site clean-up work which will be awarded to a local contractor shortly.

With the issuance of the contract for the electrical service restoration work, Mincore will work with local contractors, JBI Engineering and Kingy’s Electrical in the coming weeks to complete the electrical restoration and restore power to the site.

Engineering and design

Engineering escalates with process engineering focusing on finalizing the process scheme, heat and mass balance, and starting piping and instrumentation schemes.

Structural engineering begins working the steel for the briquette cart support structure and the bunker designs for the coal and silica products.

Mechanical engineering undertakes plant layout planning and optimization has started with 3D modeling, equipment data sheets and technical specifications for ash, hydromet and briquetting loading areas.

Detailed design and modeling of the reduction furnace area, including loading briquettes and unloading product, has begun, supported by test work undertaken in conjunction with CSIRO.

Interest of suppliers

Over 72 vendors have expressed interest in supporting the Latrobe Valley Demonstration Factory Project, through the vendor portal on the website.

The prequalification of potential contractors for the construction work as a prelude to the official tender has started.

Provisional plan

Latrobe’s focus for the coming weeks will be the completion of the electrical restoration work, the start of the site clean-up and the tender for the construction of the administration building.

The completed risk assessment of the project will be updated and a Risk and Operability Analysis Workshop (HAZOP) will be organized.

In addition, engineering will continue to complete the piping and engineering diagrams, finalize the plant setup, and update the 3D model with the latest supplier data and specifications for ash management and hydromet.
