Text description provided by the architects. Located in a small alley near an elementary school, the house served primarily as a lunch retreat for a mother and daughter, as their house was far from school and work. Without emphasizing the importance of daily use, the mother prioritized the comfort and enjoyment of her little girl who just entered her first year. The design was inspired by a children’s ‘tree house’: the ‘foot’ and ‘branches’ were the structural frame carrying the floors as well as the improvement of the structure along the walls, the ‘crown’ consisted of open common areas and the ” house ‘was the private rooms settling on the’ branches’.

To handle the small 3x10m plot, the design was planned to combine many functions into a single “element”. Not only did “The tree” play the role of structure, but it was also the staircase with enough landing for other small tasks; the screen that helped block the sun; and the “support” supporting “the crown”. The integration of several functions in a single object would optimize the spatial flexibility. Playground and functional spaces have been merged instead of being completely separate. The bond between mother and daughter was strengthened in an open environment, as their common space was maximized.

âMy daughter’s zodiac sign was the Serpent, I named it Lâm in the hope of freedom. I feel like it’s a bit similar to your design for this house, âthe client told us, after we shared our ideas. For all reasons, we call the house the LÃM house.
