The chairman of one of the nation’s most prominent conservative think tanks has spoken out against the $40 billion aid package for Ukraine currently being discussed in Congress.
“A strong America is the ultimate deterrent against Russia and China,” Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts tweeted on Friday. “It’s also the primary moral responsibility of our elected leaders. What Russia won’t deter is a typical Washington game of using people in crisis to rush a $40 billion package that didn’t been neither verified nor discussed.”
GRAHAM DEFENDS POSITION ON AID TO UKRAINE, SAYS FATE OF TAIWAN AND BEYOND DEPENDS ON PUTIN STOP
Roberts was responding to a tweet from National Review’s David French that called the aid program a “bargain”.
Roberts added in a follow-up tweet that it was not the Tories’ “responsibility” to “approve” the spending package.
“It is not the responsibility of @Heritageor the conservative movement, to endorse The Swamp’s broken policy-making process or to accept false choices between supporting allies and governing responsibly,” Roberts said. “Both goals can be achieved – if we have the courage to do so.
Roberts told Fox News Digital that the Heritage Foundation is not opposed to assisting Ukraine’s “heroic” efforts in its war against Russia, but must first ask “what is in the best interests of the people American”.
“The Heritage Foundation supports helping Ukrainians, especially if there has been full analysis by Congress using its committee structure and custom of debates to actually have that conversation,” Roberts said. “At the same time, we have this analysis, we should be weighing priorities and Congress is really broken on how it is going about spending the American people’s money.”
The bill, which includes military, economic and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, was approved by the House earlier this week by a vote of 368 to 57. The 57 “no” votes were cast by Republicans who argued that the money was loosely allocated and would be better spent at home tackling issues such as soaring inflation.

“The audacity of members of Congress lecturing us on their way through a $40 billion funding bill for Ukraine with incalculable funding, no real debate, no amendments, no openness to U.S. oil and gas and 4 hours to read before you start voting,” Republican Congressman Chip Roy, who voted against the package, tweeted this week.
The Senate is currently assessing $40 billion in additional aid to Ukraine as its war with Russia continues to rage. Senator Mitch McConnell and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer want the package passed immediately, but Senator Rand Paul delayed the vote for fear that the money would need to be watched.

“My oath of office is to the US Constitution, not a foreign nation,” the Kentucky Republican tweeted. “Congress is once again trying to pass a spending bill – a bill that I doubt anyone has actually read – and there is no control over how the money is spent.”
Roberts told Fox News Digital that the American people are “behind” Rep. Roy and Senator Paul and want to stop and “really debate” Ukrainian spending.
“We want to help Zelenskyy and the Ukrainians,” Roberts said. “They’re heroic. It’s in America’s interest to stop Vladimir Putin. But it’s not in America’s interest to keep spending money we don’t have. This is the source of inflation.”
