The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced that it will hold its Strategic Retreat and Planning Workshop for the Council of the Wise (CoW) starting today on the 21 and February 22 in Lagos, Nigeria.
The CoW is one of the mediation organs of the ECOWAS Peace and Security Architecture established under the third chapter of Articles 17 and 20 of the 1999 Protocol relating to the Mechanism for Prevention, Management, Resolution, maintenance of peace and conflict security, as a support structure for preventive diplomacy and mediation interventions in the region.
Council members will review the political and security situation in the region. While identifying concrete action plans for KM interventions, they will develop and validate, together with the ECOWAS Commission, a one-year action plan.
In addition to presentations on the region’s political process, emerging threats to peace and security, and general alignment of CoW response strategies, the meeting will also include debriefing and brainstorming sessions on rapid response strategies aimed at mitigating the growing peace and security challenges in the region.
In addition, participants will receive a comprehensive briefing on ECOWAS early warning mechanisms, as requested by Council members during a previous orientation workshop, while elaborating on the modalities for operationalizing the Council.
It is worth recalling that the reconstituted Council held its orientation workshop for appointed members in May 2021 in Accra, Ghana. The ECOWAS GC is currently under the leadership of former Nigerian President, HE Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
In approving the list of members appointed during its 59th Ordinary Session in June 2021, the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government further requested the Chairperson of the Commission to provide the Council with the necessary support, including the technical and administrative support, to effectively carry out its mandate.
The strategic retreat is supported by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Folke Bernadotte Academy, (FBA) Sweden.https://thenewdawnliberia.com/ecowas-to-host-first-west-africa-peace-and- forum-innovation-security/
